Signing Time – It really works

by Cheryl Lynn on August 12, 2008

When my son was a toddler, we learned the true meaning of the Terrible Two’s and they started at about 18 months old.  He would get so upset for apparently no reason and my husband & I would struggle to try to find out what it was that he wanted.  My little man could speak when he wanted to but he rarely had to as his “big sister” (she was 3 1/2 at the time) would talk for him.  We were ready to pull out our hair when I found Signing Time.

We started with My First Signs and were immediately excited.  With the first signs, we all learned ”eat”, “water”, and “milk” – yes we all learned mom, dad, & big sister.  It was amazing at how just three little signs helped calmed the tantrums.  Rather then get upset because we didn’t know what he wanted my Little Man would sign.   While our babies are now four and six, we all still watch our Signing Time videos.  The kids love to sign with the songs and our collection of videos continues to grow.

My princess was so proud in preschool when they would learn the “Letter of the Day” in American Sign Language (ASL) she would “teach” them a word to go along with the letter of the day Apple, Banana, Cloud, etc. all in ASL.  Mom and Dad love that when we go out to eat and our kids start getting a antsy rather then yell – we sign to them: be quiet, sit, or eat.  What made the Terrible Two’s not so terrible has turned into a fun family game.  Thanks to Rachel, Alex, & Leah my children are having fun while learning a second language.
